At our office, we offer periodontal treatments designed to combat the effects of gum disease and prevent its spread. But aside from our in-office procedures, we can also help you address the problem after you leave your appointment and protect your oral health between visits with our dentist and team. We do this with antibiotic periodontal treatments. Depending on the severity of your condition, antibiotics may be used as part of another treatment, such as scaling and root planing, or as a stand-alone approach. These medications include amoxicillin, doxycycline, macrolide, metronidazole minocycline or tetracycline. The common brand names are Actisit®, ARESTIN®, ATRIDOX®, Elyzol or PerioChip®.

While some antibiotics can be taken orally, in most periodontal treatments, the medication is administered in the form of a powder, which is applied directly in the gum pocket or the affected area. Over time, the antibiotic will prevent bacteria from forming in your mouth and will fight any bacteria that may not have been removed during your appointment.

We will provide you with instructions for your aftercare. Carefully following these instructions and maintaining a strong oral health regimen will help ensure that your antibiotic treatments are as effective as possible.

If you are struggling with gum disease and would like to see if antibiotic periodontal treatments could improve your oral health, contact our office. One of our team members can give you more information and schedule your appointment.
